Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1½ cups warm water (100°F to 110°F)
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup sliced almonds or walnuts (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water and honey in a bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough gently, shape it into a round loaf or braid, and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Sprinkle nuts on top of the loaf before baking for added texture. Bake for about 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
