  • 1 cup Long-grain white rice Rinse before using for optimal texture.

  • 1 Bell pepper Substitute with other vegetables like zucchini or corn based on availability.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Minced, fresh is best.
  • 1 can Diced tomatoes 14.5 oz, undrained; can substitute with fresh tomatoes.
  • 2 cups Chicken broth Use vegetable broth for a vegetarian dish.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil Any neutral oil can be substituted.

For Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 teaspoon Paprika
  • Salt and black pepper To taste.
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes Add for a kick of heat.

How to Make Sausage and Rice Skillet

  • In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  • Add 1 pound of sliced beef sausage to the skillet and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.
  • In the same skillet, toss in 1 medium diced onion and 1 bell pepper (any color) and sauté for 4-5 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in 1 cup of rinsed long-grain white rice and toast it in the skillet for 1-2 minutes.
  • Mix in 1 can (14.5 oz) of undrained diced tomatoes and 2 cups of chicken broth along with your seasonings, then return the browned sausage to the skillet.
  • Bring everything to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet. Let it simmer for 18-20 minutes.
  • Remove the skillet from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Fluff the rice with a fork, and season to your liking before serving.

Notes

Optional: Sprinkle with fresh herbs or a squeeze of lemon juice just before serving for a refreshing touch.
